‘Friends In The Bubble Bath’ (Remixes) Show audiobooks’ Reflective Side

audiobooks’ debut album Now (in a minute) is spellbinding, master producer David Wrench and 21 year old art student Evangeline Ling leave listeners in an instant trance. In truth, the pairing is both unique and fruitful. Wrench’s technical ability combines with small segments of Ling’s text stories to produce, well, a fantastical audiobook of sound.

‘Friends In The Bubble Bath’ is the product of said debut album. This set of remixes redefine a track which is both thoughtful and reflective. An example of powerful, clever storytelling, the remixes build on the atmosphere of the LP version of the track.

One of the four see Welsh songstress Gwenno interpret the track in a more reflective manner. Speaking on it, she suggests “I wanted to create a reflective atmosphere around Evangeline and David’s lyrics, to try and compliment the story and that feeling of the party still trying to keep going at 3am, as parties tend to do.”

Gabe Gurnsey’s take on the track is far more intimidating, think a velvet walled room in the back of a prominent London night club. Oozy techno mixes with pulsating choral repetition in sublime fashion. One would soundtrack an 80s German discotheque to Gurnsey’s gamma ray mix – yes, that good.

Gurnsey says: “I wanted to take all that energy they exude vocally and musically and bring it onto the dance floor. I ended up working on two remixes which work side by side, reflecting that chemistry David and Evangeline have in their live performances.”

This set of remixes offer a different interpretation to ‘Friends In The Bubble Bath.’ One suggests their best listening conditions are on night buses, early morning strolls along the Kings Road or indeed the continuation of a frantic dinner party. Quite simply, mesmerising.
