Lucy Gaffney’s brand of dream-pop is captivating. ‘Can’t Escape’ is troubled. It treads upon heartbreak in an unassumingly dark manner.
Exchanging life in Northern Island for the Mersey, Gaffney now calls Liverpool home. In terms of music, the city is centripetal. The track, released via the forward thinking Modern Sky, was recorded at Liverpool’s Parr Street Studios alongside co-producers James Skelly and Thom Southern.
Recorded at the tail end of romance, it describes the hopelessness of a love long-departed. Saddening and entirely relatable, it’s floating acoustics and sharp lyricism creates a body of pure emotion.
Gaffney takes inspiration from Radiohead and The Coral and sits somewhere on the musical spectrum between Carly Simon and Jenny Lewis. Her sound is immersive and will no doubt ascend the musical pyramid in the coming years.
Out now on Modern Sky.
