Lucy Gaffney’s ethereal take on a genre already well polished is refreshing. ‘In The Air’ is wondrously celestial.
Gaffney’s lockdown releases have been second to none. Reworking of Oasis’ ‘Songbird’ garnered popular support on Instagram via Liam Gallagher no less. A little later, she offered a new interoperation of DMA’s ‘In The Air,’ leading to the Australian’s outfits Matt Mason reaching out.
Pitching in with guitars and all round musical reworking, the collaboration is entirely heavenly. The rework, described as a “sugar coated bullet to the chest” gives true definition to its original release. Instantly recognisable voice combines with strong harmony in gut-wrenching fashion.
‘In The Air’ follows the release of debut single ‘Can’t Escape.’ A ferocious introduction to a career set to no doubt span many years. Recorded at the tail end of romance, it describes the hopelessness of a love long-departed.
Released via Modern Sky/Run On Records.
